We’re gearing up for this year’s Community Service Day. For those of you in charge of the event, marketing the event for the office, or if you’re looking for a way to share it on your own channels, here’s a shot list you can take with you to your project so you’re prepared for your social media posts!
Also….
Work with your CSD event coordinator to submit your event information, including videos & photos from the day, to the team at Services with this Google Form. We’ll feature as many projects as we can in our blog and on the brand social channels.
Due end of day Monday June 12.
Short-Form Video
When filming for TikTok, Reels, or YouTube Shorts, you can use your smart phone camera. Just film holding your phone vertical (up and down, like you do when you’re scrolling social media) for the best clips that are optimized for those platforms. No need for fancy equipment, unless you want to use a tripod, extra light, a mini mic, or something like that to add to your content. But it’s not required!
Before you start filming, try to have a good idea of the video you want to make in your head. Maybe there’s a video out there you want to emulate, or you have an idea all your own - it’s a good idea to write out a little story board to help you conceptualize it before you start filming.
General Video Concepts:
Day in the Life
POV you’re at Windermere’s Community Service Day
Before & After
Show the scene of the project when you show up & when you are done
Or get silly and show how dirty volunteers get over the course of the day “this is me at the start of the day-this is me one hour in” and so forth
Interview of volunteers
Here’s a shot list you might consider:
Pan of the project before you start
Show the Windermere signage, or the signage of the beneficiary, close up with volunteers in the background - extra points for using this to plan a transition
Capture the project leader explaining to the group, filming from the crowd
Capture the project leader explaining to the group from behind the leader to see the interested & excited faces & reactions of the volunteers
Wide angle time-lapse of the entire project
Candids of volunteers working on the various projects from a variety of perspectives, think high up, face to face, from below, from far away and close up, etc.
Point of view shot of what you’re working on - think a birds eye of a shovel starting to dig, or hands placing food items in bags, etc.
Shot of you working on your portion of the project - if possible show your face
This can also be of you high fiving someone if that’s easier!
Volunteers clapping and celebrating together
Leader handing a big check to the beneficiary
Volunteers cheering their teammates on while they do something really hard, or when a part of the project gets finished
Group shot of volunteers posing for the big group photo in front of signage
Pan of the project after you finish
Similar shots from the post-event lunch or celebration
Tip: Film longer than what you expect you’ll need. This way you can be sure you’ll capture really dynamic shots of people and things moving. But allow for short clips to show the main idea of each scene without hanging too long.
Steal My Day in the Life Plan:
Showing up to our project site, filming any Windermere signage, as well as any signage of our beneficiary (0:10) (early movement sparks curiosity and use this time to intro the video with a voiceover or text on screen)
Screen record of adding the CSD auto-response to my email (0:03)
Transition from PJs to my CSD outfit with my new shirt (0:05)
Possibly a close up of pulling the shirt over my head, or just showing it to the camera
Make my high-protein breakfast, tea, and fill my water bottle (0:10)
Our event coordinator explaining our project to the group (0:02)
Pan of volunteers splitting up, in the middle of working, laughing together, etc. (0:03-0:07)
Ask someone to film me (or set up my tripod) while i work on my portion of the project (0:05)
Transition showing the before and after if there’s a clear difference, especially of my portion of the project, but also the project as a whole (0:05-0:08)
Pan of our team at our post-event BBQ (0:02)
Group shot of the team cheering for a job well done (0:03)
(0:48 - 1:00)

Photos
If you’re more of a still image kind of a person, you might be planning to create an Instagram Carousel, Facebook Album, or sharing images to your favorite social platforms like LinkedIn or Twitter.
Depending on your plan, you might take a camera with you, otherwise, using your smart phone camera is perfectly acceptable as well. You’ll want to plan your shots based on the content of the image, using horizontal to capture a wide scene, and vertical to capture a tall one.
Here’s a shot list you might consider:
Wide angle of the project before you start
Wide angle of the volunteers getting the introduction from the project lead
Posed and smiling shots of the volunteers at different times throughout the project
Ask volunteers to pause what they’re doing and smile at you for a photo
Candids of volunteers cheering and celebrating together in large groups
Candids of volunteers high-fiving, hugging, and laughing throughout the day
Big check presentation
Group shot of everyone who volunteered smiling in front of the finished project, or in front of a sign of your beneficiary or location
Wide angle of the project when you’ve finished
Group shot at the post-event lunch or celebration
Tip: Play with the exposure and flash settings on your camera to capture high quality images. And always check before you let people walk away to make sure they have their eyes open, they’re smiling, and the lighting shows their faces! The subjects of your photos will thank you, and they’re more likely to engage with your post if they look good 😉

What to Avoid:
Sometimes it’s hard to avoid these shots, but even if you capture them, we don’t recommend posting any of these to social media, or using them for your marketing efforts.
People eating
Volunteers from behind, especially bent over working on their project
People frowning or yawning, etc.
